Why is 1990 Institute offering this contest?
1990 Institute has as its mission educating the next generation of Americans and Chinese to broaden and increase mutual understanding. 1990 Institute believes that education paves the way for Americans to understand more about China, and for Chinese to understand more about Americans. With this essay contest, 1990 Institute encourages college students to engage in a deep understanding of modern China, and in so doing, to learn more about a country which is complex, not easily understood, and quickly on the rise as a superpower.

When does 1990 Institute announce the winners?
July 15, 2019
Can I submit my essay in Chinese?
All essays are required to be submitted in English.
What is the age limit for the contest?
There is no age minimum or maximum – 1990 Institute only requires that the entrant be enrolled in an undergraduate college or university as of the the submission deadline.
If my essay is one of the three winners of the contest, will I have the opportunity to present my paper?
Yes! 1990 Institute offers a seminar, CHINA NOW, on July 26 and 27, 2019, in Redwood City, CA. We’ll contact you with details once you have been chosen as a winner.
