Dr. John Ma has over 20 years of experiences in research & development, higher education, investment and management in both the US and China, mainly in the Hi-tech fields spanning biotech, IT, environmental biotechnology, climate change and renewable energy.
Currently Dr. Ma is Vice President of Investment, CL Investment Group (New York), and Director of Corporate Branding (since 2016), where he co-founded a portfolio company Epitas Biosciences (Shenzhen) and served as Vice President and Board Director (2016-18). Before that he served as President of North America, China Merchants New Energy Group (2015-16); Pengcheng Scholar Professor, and Founding Vice Dean, School of Environment and Energy, Peking University Shenzhen (2009-14); and various senior research positions at universities and research institutes in the US.
Dr. Ma has contributed a lot of his time and effort to non-profit organizations and social activities in the past 20 years or so. He was one of the founding members of the US-China Green Energy Council, and served as Vice President of IT from 2008 to 2011. He has been serving as a Director of The 1990 Institute since 2002, and was a co-organizer for several projects promoting US-China relations through art and education. In his time in Shenzhen, he also served as a Senior Hi-Tech Consultant to the Shenzhen Municipal Government.
In addition to science and technology, Dr. Ma enjoys creative writing and graphic design as a secondary career. He founded and maintained Longtan, a BBS for overseas Chinese with more than 6000 members (2000-06). He was a columnist for Shenzhen Evening News (2012-13), and Editor-in-Chief for Jing View (2013-14), a documentary series imported from the US (Frontline and PBS), and re-produced by China Education TV for the Chinese audience.
Dr. Ma holds a B.S. from Peking University (1994), an M.S. from Rutgers University (1997), both in Molecular Biology, and Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics from Stanford University (2006).
