“China’s Growing Global Impact” Series
What It Means for U.S. Teachers and Students
Teachers WorkshopsWorkshop Goals: The goals of these annual workshops, started in 2013, are to enable U.S. teachers to become more knowledgeable about China and U.S.-China issues and commit a larger portion of their classroom time to delivering lessons on China that are relevant, stimulating and consistent with Common Core State Standards and to prepare students for a better understanding of China in the 21st Century as China emerges as a major power in the world. 2014 Teachers Workshop The 2014 Teachers Workshop was held August 4-5, 2014 at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation San Mateo Conference Center in San Mateo, CA. It received glowing endorsement from participating Bay Area Middle and High School Teachers who attended. This year’s Workshop focused on the timely topic of China’s “Balancing Economic Development and Environmental Sustainability, Challenges and opportunities for China’s New Leadership” . An excellent panel of 6 expert speakers from diverse academic and business backgrounds gave thought-provoking and informative presentations, moderated by Dr. Tom Gold, Professor of Sociology at Berkeley’s Center of Chinese Studies. Participating teachers had the opportunity to collaborate with each other in breakout sessions to create and share curriculum materials for their classrooms based on what they heard from the speakers. In addition, presentations were given by two special speakers: Ambassador Yuan Nansheng, San Francisco Consul General, People’s Republic of China and Dr Daniel Chao, Chairman of the 1990 Institute Board of Directors. Nearly 60 Bay Area teachers representing 15 Bay Area school districts registered for this workshop. About 1/3 were middle school teachers and the other 2/3 were high school teachers who teach subjects such as World History, U.S. History, Government, Asian Studies, Global Perspectives, and Advanced Placement Chinese. About 80% of the teachers were from public schools and 20% from private schools.
